Cong Vinh has been placed alongside other regional stars, including Kiatisuk Senamuang of Thailand and Bambang Pamungkas of Indonesia, who impressed in previous versions of regional tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games, the ASEAN Football Federation Cup, and the Tiger Cup.

Following his retirement from professional football a few years ago, Cong Vinh ended his career as the top goal scorer in the national team’s history, winning 83 caps for his country and scoring a total of 51 goals in the process.

Born in Nghe An, the striker is most famous for scoring the decisive goal in the dying moments of the second leg tie against Thailand in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup finals, helping Vietnam become champions for the first time. Other notable achievements include being awarded the Vietnamese Golden Ball in 2004, 2006, and 2007.

Among the other legends of Southeast Asian football are Neil Etheridge of the Philippines, the only goalkeeper to make the list. At present he is playing for Cardiff City in the English Championship and has played his entire club career in England. Although he played in the 2010 and 2018 versions of the AFF Cup, he failed to make a significant impression.

Elsewhere, former Malaysian player Soh Chin Aun who ended his career in 1988 also made the list.
