The game got off to a dramatic start, with three goals coming inside the first 15 minutes.
Thailand struck early following a basic error by Vietnamese goalkeeper Van Toan in the fifth minute. The goalkeeper, who had been selected over Bui Tien Dung, made a basic mistake when an attempted clearance hit Thai footballer Supachai, causing the ball to deflect into the Vietnamese net.
Things went from bad to worse just six minutes later as Suphanat struck to give Thailand a 2-0 lead.
Despite the unfavourable circumstances, the Vietnamese team showed great determination and never gave up. They managed to find a way back into the game in the 15th minute when Thanh Thinh crossed to Tien Linh who headed the ball into the Thai net.
With Vietnam losing 2-1 at half-time, Ho Tan Tai was replaced by Ha Duc Chinh.
The second half saw Vietnam chasing the game and going on the attack. This pressure eventually led to a penalty in the 71st minute, with Tien Linh equalising to make the score 2-2 going into the closing stages of the tie.
With both teams enjoying good form in front of goal, the match finished in a draw.
Vietnam therefore finish Group B in first position, meaning that they will face the second-place team from Group A in the semi-finals of the SEA Games.
